The history of disposable e-cigarettes in the Netherlands dates back to 2019, when research by Trimbos, a Utrecht research institute in the Netherlands, showed that young people were more likely to choose e-cigarettes over regular cigarettes. Although e-cigarettes may not be sold directly to minors, they are easily available, especially on Chinese websites.
In recent years, the disposable e-cigarette market in the Netherlands has seen explosive growth, especially among young people. London has become the largest market for e-cigarettes in the UK, and people who smoke e-cigarettes can be seen everywhere on the streets, especially disposable e-cigarettes with flavors such as mango, lemon, strawberry and mint. According to a 2023 report by the UK anti-smoking foundation Action on Smoking and Health (ASH), one in five teenagers have used e-cigarettes, and nearly 70% of teenagers said they most often use disposable e-cigarettes.
However, the popularity of disposable e-cigarettes has also raised concerns about safety and health. Doctors have called for a ban on smoking, and schools have set up e-cigarette detectors to reduce the use of e-cigarettes by young people. In addition, the price of disposable e-cigarettes is relatively low, about $6.20 per stick, which makes them very attractive to teenagers. Nevertheless, it is uncertain whether disposable e-cigarettes will become a long-term trend, and further research and measures are needed to deal with the problems they bring.
